Year 3 visit Stibbington Centre to study "Water, water everywhere"
The Year Three children travelled by coach to the Stibbington Environmental Education Centre to take part in an activity day entitled Water, water everywhere. The day was designed to enhance our current Geography topic about water. We were accompanied by a willing band of parent volunteers to whom we offer great thanks. Low adult to child ratios mean all children can gain so much from each activity.
After a short introduction we set off into the village where we took part in a picture trail to discover evidence of water. We learnt about stop taps, storm drains, sluice valves and sewers. We then continued our walk along the track into the fields near the river to see the local sewage treatment works. We discovered how the sewage works filters and processes the waste water before returning it to the river.
Once back on the coach we made the short journey to Sacrewell Farm where we studied the water system at the mill. We also had the opportunity to discover which creatures lived in the overflow stream. We were thrilled to discover Mayfly Nymphs as their presence indicates that the water was of good quality.
After a superb packed lunch provided by Chef, (thank you from us all), we designed our own filtration system to filter muddy water. We were able to choose in which quantities we used sand, small stones and large stones. We timed the length of time it took to filter 200ml of muddy water. Finally we compared our results and decided which group’s filter was the most effective.
A fun day was had by all.
