Science enthusiasts from Year’s 5, 6 & 7 attend dramatic science lecture at Bedford School

Five pupils, selected for their passion for science, from each of the year groups 5, 6 and 7 attended a dramatic lecture at Bedford School.

The lecture, billed as, “The chemistry of absolutely nothing”, focused on air.  The presenter was the highly acclaimed Bedford School’s own Deputy Headmaster (academic),  Irfan Latif.  Keen Witham pupils arrived first and headed straight for the front row to get the best seats in the house. They were thrilled at close hand by flames, flashes, explosions and a cacophony of ever louder bangs.

Demonstrations included using liquid nitrogen to make instant ice cream (samples of which were freely distributed to a grateful audience), making “elephant toothpaste” from hydrogen peroxide, screaming inferno jelly babies, exploding hydrogen balloons, igniting bubbles of methane gas held in the hands to make balls of flame and the “You tube” Mentos and fizzy drink classic, to name but a few.

The presenter kindly made time to pose for a photo with Witham pupils after the lecture, and much to their delight supplied cups of steaming dry ice for theatrical effect.

The lecture was relevant to all of the year groups current topics and the pupils left greatly inspired.
