Ian Post visits in the guise of a Roman Soldier

The Year Three and Year Four children were visited by Ian Post in the guise of a soldier from the XIIII Legion. He explained to the children about the vast size of the Roman Empire and about being a member of the Roman Army. He told the children that the soldier himself was responsible for buying his uniform, helmet, armour and sword – money was deducted from his wages each year. The children enjoyed the opportunity to look at the helmets and armour as they were modelled by some of their classmates.
Weapons were a fascinating partof his talk that grabbed everyone’s attention, as they examined the sword and a javelin. Ian Post also explained the Roman’s organized fighting techniques and their strong reliance on teamwork. The children could then understand how a very small Roman army was able to defeat Queen Boudicca and her huge Celtic massed tribes.
