Excellent weekend for Witham teamsEight fixtures against Ranby House and Spratton Hall, two consistently strong opponents, promised a highly competitive Saturday afternoon, and that was just how it proved.
The U13A and U13B sides both recorded excellent victories at Ranby. The first half was very tough against a tall and athletic U13A Ranby side. However, a strategic changing of positions led to the team running away with the game in the second half winning 31-15. The shooting was consistent throughout and Caroline Boucher in defence gave the Ranby shooters few opportunities as the second half progressed. The B match was an end to end game with surges by Ranby in the first quarter and by Witham in the third quarter. Jenny Broome was outstanding in the centre court and turned the game around. Lizzie Bowen West, at GK, gave the Ranby shooters few opportunites as Witham secured a 10-8 victory.
At Witham the U11A started superbly, but Ranby clawed their way back in to the game, and moved in to the lead in the third quarter. They then starved the Witham shooters of possession to record a well deserved 14-11 victory. The U11B game was a role reversal with Ranby holding the lead for three quarters of the match. However, with much excitement and five superb goals from Witham in the final ten minutes, the Witham VII secured a 7-5 victory. Both Rosie Dawes and Eliza Bradbeer had particularly effective games.
Four Witham teams headed to Spratton Hall for football fixtures. A single goal just three minutes from time was enough to secure victory for the Colts A. In a hard fought, tension-filled match, with very little to choose between the sides and a 0-0 draw looking likely, Alex Hobill popped up to score the winner with a close-range shot. The B team had an equally impressive victory, with goals from Mathew Vaughan, Luke Beale and George Elbourne securing a 3-0 victory.
Adamantine defence was the order of the day as the Colts C maintained their strong away form with Dominic Ktori, Billy Chatterton and Harry Fountaine ensuring that keeper Lordie Bevan was only called upon twice in the first half. As the game progressed the Spratton Hall strike force were increasingly starved of any worthwhile possession whilst Archie Sumner and Egan Pashley supplied plentiful fare for Will Knight and Toby Taylor. The final score was 6-0 with Archie getting a well deserved hat-trick with Egan, Will and Toby contributing goals in this confident performance. Finally, despite manful defending against a skilful Spratton side the U9 Football VII had a difficult afternoon against an impressive Spratton side who ran out 6-0 winners.
A single goal just three minutes from time was enough to secure victory for the Colts A at Spratton Hall. The boys fought hard in a tension-filled match, with very little to choose between the sides. However, with a 0-0 draw looking likely, Alex Hobill popped up to score the winner with a close-range shot. A very satisfying result indeed - well played boys.
An excellent afternoon of sport, with some really good results.
