Match summary: 10th February 2010
Snow flurries don’t deter Witham teams!
HOCKEY v MAIDWELL:
Witham 1st XI: they met opponents Maidwell who were seeking revenge for a narrow 3-0 defeat in the rugby season. This encounter drew parallels to that match; our boys looked efficient in their display and took a well deserved lead through Barney Carr. A superbly worked short corner routine rounded off by Freddie Johnsrud gave us 2 goals at half time, whilst Maidwell scored an excellent strike of their own with keeper Robert Shepherd uncharacteristically well beaten. The second half saw some frantic end-to-end action with lovely wing play by Charlie Bradbeer and Angus Cooper. The defensive trio of George Chatterton, Ed Beddows and Jack Capstick-Dale (with Charles Hay deputising from the bench) stood firm and Angus Cooper capped a fine performance by rolling home a fortunate goal to give us a 3-1 win at the final whistle. Congratulations to Ed Beddows for virtually unanimously taking the Man of the Match award.
NETBALL v WISBECH:
Five girls’ teams played netball matches v Wisbech GS. The U13A team continued with another solid performance. Diana Bevan and Georgie Hobill were notable: they made many fine interceptions which began some fluid attacking play back down the court to the shooters. Final score: 23-3. The U13B extended their unbeaten run to 5 games after a 16-3 win over Wisbech. There was some fine shooting from Jessica Hay and Scooter Gillespie, with Hannah Chatterton playing a commanding role as centre. Strong defence once again from Goalkeeper Lizzie Bowen-West ensured that the Wisbech attack where closed down effectively. The U11A Netball team gave a solid performance against a taller and older U12 Wisbech team. Accurate shooting and good movement in the centre court assisted the team in achieving a 7 - 7 draw. The U9 teams and their supporters enjoyed some warmth in the Sports Hall yesterday and were the envy of many outside! The U9A team beat Wisbech 4-2: Eve Scott was outstanding and was backed up by some great defending from Electra Winter and Sophia Gregory. In the U9B game the girls all pulled together to put in a solid performance, winning 2-0.
NETBALL V KIMBOLTON:
The U11B netball team had a tough time playing against a physically tough Kimbolton team. There was some nice play down the court but the shooters will have to try and convert more of their chances in future. Frankie Gates was moved up from the ‘C’ team mid-way through the game and stepped up to the mark making a most positive impression. Unfortunately the girls lost by one goal! The U11C team showed great skill and focus. Defenders Millie Page and Frankie Gates successfully stopped the Kimbolton shooters getting any goals until the third quarter. Shooters, Emma Thompson and Ella Dupree demonstrated outstanding technique. However, great play and hard work by all the girls allowed Witham to win 6-1.
INTER-HOUSE FOOTBALL COMPETITION:
Boys from Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 took part in the annual inter-house football competition. The large group of spectators enjoyed a thrilling afternoon of football, with impressive play and a real desire to win shown by all teams. Tate won the Colts group, whilst Maitland won the under 8 & 9 group. With all the results from the two groups combined, the overall winners of the 2010 competition were Maitland. A detailed breakdown of the results and the final table can be viewed here. Well played everybody!
