Midlands Inter Schools Show Jumping Regional Qualifier- 6th March 2010

at Onley Grounds Equestrian Complex, Willoughby, Warwickshire

Surprise and delight washed over the faces of the Witham Hall School Show Jumping team on Saturday 6th March at Onley Equestrian Centre at the Midlands Inter Schools Show Jumping Regional Qualifier when they heard they had won the team event in the 80cm (2’7”) class. Riders Caroline Boucher on Copper, Diana Bevan on Prestwood Smokey Gin (Gordon), Harriet Coney on Mizen Emer (Emi) and George Chatteron on Louis qualify for the National Schools Equestrian Association Championships at Addington in December 2010.

Jumping in order with Caroline leading the way on Copper and with  three clear rounds  from Caroline, Hatty and George the full team went into the jump off against four other ‘clear round’ schools. Our three year eight girls all went clear in good times, leaving year seven George Chatterton on Louis, one of the smallest ponies in the competition at 13.2hh to go for broke, making us all gasp at his audacious corner cutting and tight route to come home in a time fast enough to earn him fourth place in the individual competition out of a field of fifty riders and bringing the team home and dry in first place with a combined time three seconds clear of the opposition.

Success in the 90 cm (3’) class followed with a team third place, narrowly missing the jump off (and a chance to qualify in another class for the National Schools Equestrian Association Championships) when Caroline and Hatty rode clear rounds. With only four faults as their combined score (i.e. one jump down), the team missed joining the jump off but whipped home in third place, the fastest team of the ‘four faulters’. Caroline and Hatty qualified for the individual competition jump off, both recording extremely fast times with Caroline unlucky to tip one jump with her foot and Hatty home clear to take second place in a very fast time missing first place by a whisker after a round as cheeky and athletic as only she and stag like Emi can be.

The winners sashes were in Witham colours, they must have known we were coming!
