Colts B beat local A team and U9 boys show early promise!

Football v Kirkstone House

Colts B wins 6-2 v Kirkstone U11A

A local derby game awaited the Colts B this week, away at Kirkstone House. The game started brightly, with both sides not backing out of any tackles. Witham opted for a swift passing game and were able to work the ball down the wings with the key help of Leo Cox and George Goodson. Kirkstone proved threatening with their long ball, trying to get in behind the Witham defence. Will Davison and George Darley did a fantastic job, tackling hard and clearing the ball. Witham scored the first goal thanks to a fine strike from Joshua Coulson. The boys then doubled their lead with a goal from Leo Cox. Credit to Kirkstone House, they fought back well and the sides went in at half time at 2-2. The second half was a different story. Witham's passing was sublime at times and soon the goals started to fly in. Joshua picked up another goal, George Goodson scored two and Leo Cox added a second to his tally. This was a truly magnificent effort by the boys who won the match 6-2. Man of the match without a doubt went to George Goodson, whose hard tackling, powerful dribbling and excellent eye for goal ensured Witham were always a threat. A special mention must also go to goalkeeper Edward Anthony who made some fantastic saves, particularly in the first half and showed great command of his area. Well done boys!

Football v Bedford Modern

Witham Colts A loses 0-4

Despite a battling performance, the Colts A were defeated by an excellent Bedford Modern side.  The visitors dominated the first half but were contained by determined Witham defending.  We were very pleased to get to half-time at 0-0 but knew it would be difficult to contain Bedford in the second half.  Sadly for us, they scored two goals soon after the restart, and added another two just before the final whistle.  Although the result was disappointing, there were again some encouraging individual performances; namely from goalkeeper Toby Fowler on his Colts A début, and from central defender Jack Turner.

Witham Colts C loses 1 – 5

Playing on a large pitch against a very confident and assured Bedford team Witham started slowly and Bedford capitalised on some indecision and got a quick goal. However, some brave tackling and decisive running by skipper Finn Chatterton got the team going and although we were three goals in arrears by half time things were certainly improving.

Will Moore and Alex Edwards kept  goal in the first half; however, the second half saw Freddie Arlott taking up goalkeeping duties and although the frequency of the Bedford attacks lessened, he was certainly kept busy and acquitted himself very well.

The second half saw Witham realising that the big pitch required them to work very hard and accordingly the boys responded better to the challenge with Henry Saunders Watson, Finn Chatterton and George East starting to make some progress. Eventually determination paid off and George latched on to a through ball and placed it adroitly past the advancing Bedford keeper to give the Witham faithful a reward for their unstinting support and encouragement.

All agreed that Finn should be named Man of the Match for his superlative effort – he never stopped running and he made every single 50/50 ball his own.

Football v Wellow House

Witham U9A won 3-1

A strong Wellow side put Witham on the back foot at the start of the game. But some superb defence work from the back three turned the ball over and sent it up field to Witham’s mid field players. Fancy foot work and accurate passing saw Joe Fox score the opening goal of the game, in the bottom right corner.

At 1-0 up Witham started to relax, allowing Wellow to even the score late in the second half.

Half way through the second half Witham finally took back the lead with Toby Hanson striking the ball with perfect power and accuracy placing the ball in the top right corner of the goal.

In the dying seconds of the game Wellow fouled in the penalty area giving Orlando Thain a shot at goal. Wellow’s goal keeper managed to get a hand on the ball to stop it going in only for James Tattersall to strike the ball off the rebound to bring the final score to 3-1.

Witham U9B wins 4-1

The Under 9B football team got off to a flying start with a 4-1 win against Wellow House. Our thoughtful and accurate passing was impressive, and it was pleasing to see that the players kept good positional discipline – for most of the time! Oscar Fowler, Toby Coulson and Archie Smith-Maxwell executed incisive forward passes and worked well together. Oscar scored two of our goals and Toby and Archie netted one each. Wellow fought hard and ensured that the match was competitive and exciting. Well done, everyone.
