Fantastic unbeaten afternoon for Witham girls’ netball teams!

Senior Netball v Bourne Grammar School U13A

Witham U13A wins 15-8

The girls had a late game in the sports hall against a very tall Bourne U13A side.  With several players  ill, this gave Millie Coward a taste of U13A netball and she joined the girls in full force.  After a quick warm up the girls got straight into action.  The first quarter was a little scrappy, with handling and passing mistakes from both teams.  The score at quarter time was Witham 3, Bourne 1.  After a quarter time talk the girls knew exactly what was needed positionally for the game to improve.  All players showed a good level of skill and started to gel as a team.  Better passing and more opportunities at goal, gave Witham a lead of 7 goals at half time, the score 8-1.  With changes at half time at WD, a new side had to work together to keep the flow of the game going.  Bourne started to become more confident and their shooter started to get her eye in for the goal, converting 3 goals within 4 minutes.  Witham needed to pull their socks up.  At three quarter time, the gap was closing and Mrs Welch gave a very ‘to the point’ team talk for the last quarter.  Witham boosted their play and the quality of play at times was a pleasure to watch.  Their play showed the calibre of players we have playing for the A team.  The final score was Witham 15, Bourne 8.  A good game to play, with a tall, feisty Bourne team!  This will all stand the girls in good stead for future games and competitions.

Well done to all girls and thank you to our super team of parents who came to support us.  Thank you to Mr Erskine and Miss Parkinson for sorting out the after match refreshments.

U11 Netball v Kimbolton

Witham U11A wins 5-2

This was a scruffy game where we made many basic errors – passing, dodging and ball handling were at times very average. The shooters allowed themselves to be dominated by two feisty defenders and if it had not been for Ella Johnsrud at centre who continually fought back to win countless balls in the centre third the outcome could have been very different. Sophie Burnett also had a very good first game at GK – she practically cut her GS out of the game – and showed us all what a versatile player she is. Well done to all for hanging on in there and somehow coming away with a victory!

Witham U11B wins 4-2
The girls were set up for a tough match against Kimbolton and a tough match they got. Witham were evenly matched in speed and skill in this match. The games started off slowly with no goals in the 1st quarter. Both teams shared possession of the ball keeping every player on their toes moving all around the court. The first goal came to Witham in the 2nd quarter. Well manoeuvred passes led the ball into Clara Hallam’s hands who scored the goal.  Unfortunately Kimbolton didn’t stay down for long and soon returned a goal.
In the 3rd and 4th quarters Kimbolton fought back once again. However fantastic defending from Electra Winter and Jenna Lloyd slowed down the attack. This was enough –it enabled Clara to finish the match with two more goals. Witham finished with a tight but well deserved 4-2 win.

Witham U11 C wins 12 - 1

Witham U11Cs dominated their first match of the season, taking an early lead. Georgia Williams shot the first goal of the match, and along with Annabel Tollemache the two shooters continued to score progressively throughout the match. Each girl stuck to her position, defending her opponent and making good leads, accurately passing the ball into our ‘D’. Poppy Chatterton used team tactics to trick the defenders at centre pass, resulting in quick movements by WA –Sophie Smith and GA - Annabel which kept the ball down our end of the court for the majority of the match.

Clo Farmer played a fantastic first ever netball game, showing great skills both when dodging and defending. Catherine Swanston was GD, Clo Farmer and Chica Maitland rotated WD and Sophie Wass played GK.

The girls worked solidly as a team, and, as captain of the match, Georgia led the girls with some great advice.

The final result was 12 – 1 our way.  Fantastic work girls!

Witham U11D wins 2-1

This was the U11D girls first match; they were all very keen and pleased it was not too cold.

The girls started of very well with some great passing down the court, trying to keep possession of the ball, which paid off with a good goal from Chloe Sharman.

The second and third quarters were very tight, the ball travelling up and down the pitch with a few attempts from both sides, none going in. Willow Weatherby, Maria Morris and Leonie Fraser all played very good netball.

In the last quarter Kimbolton scored and Witham knew they had to score to win and not let Kimbolton score again. The girls played hard and it paid off when Lia Murray Smith scored just before the whistle went for full time.

This was an excellent start to the season, keep it up girls.
