Reports from the Oakham U10 and U12 Rugby and Netball Tournaments

U10 Netball – Mrs Hewlett

Although the U10s had never played in a match together before today, they were determined that their practices at lunch and break times over the last few weeks would enable them to play well collectively as a team. The girls started strong against St Anselm’s passing accurately down the court to the shooters who were able to convert most of their shots, resulting in a 7 – 3 win to Witham. The next match against Fairfield started a little unsteadily with us trailing 1 - 3 but the girls kept on attacking and defending tightly and pulled the match back, finishing with a 3 – 3 draw. The girls were determined to win the next game against Glebe House and finished with a convincing 3 – 0 victory. The final match of the morning was against Akeley Wood. Although we had most of the possession, we were unable to take control of the game and our opponents levelled the score 1 – 1 in the last few seconds. The morning’s efforts were rewarded with the girls winning their section. This put them into the ‘Cup’ competition in the afternoon. After a welcome lunch break we faced St Hugh’s in the semi finals. With good timing of movement into space, accurate passing and tight defending we took an early lead and dominated the match resulting in a 5 – 1 win. A very excited but nervous team stepped onto the court to face St Faith’s in the final to decide the overall winners of the tournament. The girls quickly settled down and within a few minutes began to dictate play. Everyone worked hard ensuring that possession was maintained and every opportunity was developed. A nail biting 12 minutes passed but a outstanding 5 -1 win to Witham was the end result; the girls had won the tournament! 15 schools took part, so this was a fantastic achievement, very well done to all of the girls. A very big thank you to all our parents who cheered along on the sidelines on a rather chilly Sunday and to Mrs Welch whose guidance and encouragement was very much appreciated by both the girls and myself.

U10 Rugby- Mr Whittock/Mr Padley

The U10 boys enjoyed a thoroughly satisfying day of rugby.  Despite winning two of our three group matches, we still finished third in our group due to inferior points difference.  This meant we were now in plate competition.  The boys produced a superb performance in the semi-final against Akeley Wood to run out comfortable winners, setting up a final against Coventry’s King Henry VIII.  Witham took the lead early in the match but the opposition quickly equalised.  We again edged in front early in the second half with a well-worked try.  King Henry VIIIthen pushed us very hard indeed and came very close to scoring, but our boys defended heroically and managed to hold on to win the plate.  The boys’ trophy was fully deserved for their four wins from five matches.  Well played everybody! Team:  William Knight, Alex Hobill, George Elborne, George Figgis, Charles Cox, Charlie Thain, Jack Batty.

U12 Netball – Mrs Edwards

Although Witham does not have a fixed U12A Netball side, once again for this annual event at Oakham, we put girls together from a number of different teams to make an U12A team. Prior to the event the squad of Rose Cavell-Taylor, Georgie Hobill, Jenny Broome, Anna Gonzalez, Susannah Gillespie, Poppy Thomsen-Iddenden, Emily Grace and Lila Powell did some extra training at lunch-times and at various other times that could be found in our busy school days. The day started with smiles and sunshine and a palpable feeling of excitement from within the team. In their first match against St John’s, Cambridge, the team was absolutely superb with all the players sticking to the game plan and supporting each other terrifically: they won 10-3. Against Old Buckenham Hall who were very fast on the attack the girls had to work extremely hard for their 6-5 victory. Unfortunately, play dipped in the next game and the team seemed to forget its strategies and positive play: they went down to S Anselm’s 2-4. In their final match of the morning against an athletic Wellow the side it was back to business as usual with a decisive win. This gave Witham U12s second place in the group and was enough for them to go through to the Cup/Bowl competition. In the semi finals the team was beaten by a strong and very tall team from Spratton. This put the girls in to the ‘Bowl Final’. With some tiredness evident they just about held it together against a tall team from Oakham to win 4-3. The team enjoyed superb support from a wonderful group of parents who could not have been more positive and helpful. Well done U12 girls – Oakham Festival Bowl Winners!

U12 Rugby – Mr Welch

The side grew in stature with each morning game, with the performance against Akeley Wood being particularly satisfying. Our decision making was always going to an important factor, and when at it’s best the side looked a good match for anybody. The semi-final required a wake- up call in the form of an Akeley Wood try, but it was not until the final that the side were tested in each facet of the game. Winchester House were a well organised and effective VII, and it took creativity in attack, strength at the breakdown, and desire in the tackle to establish a lead with just two minutes remaining. Even then, the defensive heroics of the 15-a-side season were required as Witham found tacklers from seemingly nowhere, but ultimately the victory was a deserved one. As ever in major tournaments ach member of the squad played a crucial part, as did the parents with their encouragement and support – thank you.
